Thanksgiving and Black Friday

In 1621 the Pilgrims invited other Native Americans to have dinner with them. This was the first Thanksgiving.

Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November. On this day people thank to be healthy, to have enough food and to have a family.

The next day is called Black Friday. On this day, shops grant a lot of discounts. Almost everybody buy christmas presents on Black Friday.

Halloween

Halloween

Halloween is a shortened form of All Hallows' Eve. Halloween means holy. Eve is the day before a holy day. Halloween was an ancient British Celtic festival. At Halloween the souls of the dead returned. People lit bonfires to frighten evil spirits. Now bonfires are only burnt on November 5th. Bonfire night.

Farrah

Yesterday, a exchange student, called Farrah, took part in our english lession. She lives in the United States in Maryland. It is 30 minutes from Washington dc. She is 22 years old and has no sisters and brothers. Her hobbies are listening to music, reading, watching TV and meeting her friends. She is in Austria because she likes Austria, espacially the mountains. In Austria, she visited Linz , Vienna, Saalbach and Salzburg.

The development of advertising - summary

At the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, advertising was used for new and fringe products but in the course of time advertising campaigns and brand-naming of products became essential. Only small factory had been flexible enough to produce things the customers want.

From 1873 to 1894, there was an economic depression, because of an over-production and under-consumption. Many small industrial firms joined to other small firms, so mass advertising increased, because these companies had to promote their new range of products.

About 1850 hundreds of manufacturers produced soap and so there were a lot of rivals. Therefore Lord Leverhulme made a soap which had a very different package and that's the reason why the cusomers bought his soap.

Lord Leverhulme was also one of the first people who realised that advertising is very important and it should contain logical and considered arguments. Nowadays small firms who can't advertise, will be squeezed or bought out by larger companies.

Our trip to italy

On Monday, the 17th of May, we went to Italy. We went 6 hours with the bus to Udine. We stayed there for 2 hours and the we continued with the trip to Bibione. In Bibione we marched in our mobil-homes and ran to the beach. Dinner was at 7 o'clock.

On Tuesday we went to Venice. There, we had to do a quiz about the town. The questions were difficult and it was very hot. At 6 o'clock we arrived in Bibione. After the dinner we relaxed on the beach and on our terace.

On Wedenesday we did archery. In the afternoon we made a biketour with a picnic. It was our first sports day of the week. It was a very nice day.

On Thursday we went to a fishing village. There we had lunch. In the afternoon we had the chance to play beach soccer, beach volleyball or botcha. It was very funny and the weahter was also very good. Thursday was our last full day in Bibione.

On Friday morning we had breakfast and at half past 9 we started our departure. We stopped two times and at 5 o'clock we arrived in Perg.

As a conclusion I might say that the trip was very brilliant. The weather was also fine and would go there immediately again.

Let's go green

Yvonne, Magdalena and Bianca did a presentation about enivronment and pollution.

Their presentation was divided into 3 parts: Climate Change, Environmental pollution and Health, Saving life on Earth.

Climate change is a very important topic all over the world. It affects all of us. I think it is very difficult to change the situation but you may try to reduce it.

There are two organisations, called WWF and Greenpeace, which want to protect environment in an active way. The websites of these organisations show you some examples for protecting environment. Both websites are great, I think.

As a conlusion I think people should use public transport or make carpools.

Lonely Planet

After the presentation of "tourism" I looked at the homepage of "lonely planet.com"!

The website is divided into six parts: Home, Destinations, Community, Shop, Hotels & Hostels and travel services.
The website is very clear. It is a very nice website and it is very comfortable for planning a trip, because you can get a lot of information about different countries and hotels!

All in all, it is a very great homepage.

My comment about the presentation "tourism"

I liked this presentation very much. The speakers were good prepared and spoke fluently. The content of the presentation was also very good.

The explanation about the website was very interesting and I liked the pictures about the sights in London at the end of the presentation!

Ivica Vastic

I read an article the other day in "austriantimes.at" and it talks about the ex-football player Ivica Vastic.

I thought you might be interested because Ivica Vastic will return to Austria Vienna and will become the manager.

Basically what it says is that the Croatia-born midfielder had signed a three year contract with the club. He started his managing career at third-league amateur side Waidhofen an der Ybbs after he had retired from professional football last summer at LASK Linz.
Vastic played for Austria Vienna between 2003 and 2005 but his most successful time was at Sturm Graz.
Vastic was part of the Austrian national team and his penalty strike against Poland in 2008 made him the oldest player in history to score in an European Championship

I think it is very good that he become the manager of the club, because he was a very good football player and he earned his stripes as a coach in Waidhofen.
